SmithRock.com - Online Rock Climbing Resource for Smith Rock, Oregon Launches

Eugene, OR-April 3, 2000—Smith Rock Media Ventures today launched SmithRock.com (http://www.smithrock.com), a comprehensive online rock climbing and outdoor recreation resource dedicated to Smith Rock State Park in Redmond, Oregon. SmithRock.com features interactive climbing routes, current weather and route conditions, weekly updated video footage of climbing at Smith Rock, a live Web cam, online merchandise, general park information, a chat room, and QTVR screen shots that allow a user to pan 360 degree photos of Smith Rock.

“I've approached the development of this site from a climber's perspective,” said Mike Volk, the creator of SmithRock.com and an avid climber since the late sixties. “Every part of the SmithRock.com site, from the visuals, to the content, to the interface, is designed to capture the distinctive feel of the Smith Rock climbing experience.”

The aim of SmithRock.com is not only to provide information, but also to become an online community for climbers. This includes plans to have monthly features that are relevant to Smith Rock climbers. The site launch feature is an interview with Alan Watts, author of “Climbers Guide to Smith Rock (http://www.smithrock.com/shop/index.html)” and the man who helped put Smith Rock on the international climbing circuit.

Commenting on the significance of Smith Rock, Watts states, “As more and more routes started to go up, it became real clear that what we were doing was significant, and not just in Smith Rock climbing, but in climbing in this country in general.”
