380' Smith Rock Highline

Jerry Misvewski traversed the longest highline at Smith Rock on August 31st. The The Aggro Gully to Cocaine Gully line spans a distance of 380 feet. Jerry set the world record in California a few weeks ago at 390 feet.

Mark Cartier Accident

On June 14, Mark Cartier headed up Mt Hood, a mountain he loved and climbed hundreds of times over the last 40 years. Tragically he took a 1000 foot fall near the top, which he did not survive.

Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Trail Damage

A short lived cloudburst during a 24 hour storm on 6/4/12 created deep ruts in many of the trails at Smith.

Small streams formed troughs, scoured down to the bedrock and deposited piles of mud on switchbacks throughout the park.

The most heavily damaged trail was the upper section of the Misery Ridge Trail on the Monkey Face side of the hill.

Busiest Weekend at Smith?

Great temperatures and the holiday weekend made for huge crowds in the park.

The campground (bivy) filled to capacity on Friday and Saturday evenings. Day use parking overflowed onto Crooked River Drive past Rockhard. Popular routes had clusters of social climbers.

New Rope Swing Policy

As of 10-17-11, leaving equipment intended for rope swing related or similar activities unattended, is prohibited and constitutes a public hazard at Smith Rock State Park.
