Smith Rock Ranger Lead Interpretative Programs

Springtime brings back the seasonal rangers to Smith Rock State Park, and with it, a great opportunity to learn from the experts. 

David Vick Interpretative Ranger Smith Rock State ParkJoin Interpretive Naturalist David Vick each weekend from 10:00 AM-1:00 PM as he answers all of your raptor questions on Saturdays and your geology questions on Sundays in these two programs:

THE RAP ON RAPTORS:  Saturdays 10:00am – 1:00pm
Observe Smith Rock’s nesting bald eagles through a powerful spotting scope. Get all of your eagle questions answered and learn about all the other species of raptors that make the park home.

Go into the park via the Chute Trail or Canyon Trail and cross the bridge. Make a left onto the River Trail until you are below Phoenix Buttress, a solid reddish-purple mass on the Smith Rock Group about a 15-minute walk downstream from the footbridge.

GEOLOGY ROCKS!  Sundays 10:00am – 1:00pm
Explore the dramatic geological events that created Smith Rock. Get all of your geology questions answered and learn about the Crooked River Caldera and Oregon’s spectacular landscapes.

Go into the park via the Chute Trail or Canyon Trail. Go to the bottom of the Service Road near the footbridge, about a 10-minute walk from the Welcome Center.
