Sometimes it takes the present to bump into the past to provoke a discussion about the future. The recent visit of world renown Czech climber Adam Ondra to Smith Rock brought Alan Watts, pioneer of Smith Rock and well-known author of the guidebook series on the area together in this video.
Every picture tells a story, but video captures a series of moments and gives them context. Local company Hydroflask, who launched the first all-insulated bottle line-up into the market, wanted to do more for its customers than talk features. They wanted to share experiences in the form of video in the "Live" section of their website with "Stories that inspire us, to inspire you."
Alan Watts and Mike Volk didn't believe that having fun climbing at Smith Rock every day in the '80s would lead to the creation of an internationally famous rock climbing destination, but the secret of this special place got out.
Getting ready to blast the old site into oblivion, we came across a few gems, like this article done for the inaugural launch of SmithRock.com. We felt it most appropriate to re-post it now, as Alan is being interviewed once again for a documentary here at the park--an upcoming feature. Enjoy.
