The spirit of Smith Rock is something hard to put your finger on. It’s been described as soul-filling—a deep connection to the volcanic energy that formed its walls, and the river that shaped its valley. Maybe that’s why 200+ volunteers show up each year at the Smith Rock Spring Thing to give something back to this magical place. This weekend was no exception, but it was more than expected. One of those times when all the bad stuff in the world melts away with a simple act of kindness.
Starting at 7:30, they lined up at the registration tables to get on work teams to help restore trails, build retaining walls, weed and plant, pick up trash, and more. Over 250 volunteers of all ages, mostly from the rock climbing community came from local areas, but also from over the mountain passes and even other states. Their single focus? To give back to a park they love.
The 2015 Smith Rock Spring Thing volunteer day starts at 8 AM on May 2. Go to the SmithRock.com Spring Thing page for more details.
