SmithRock.com is happy to report for all you anxious climbers that the First Kiss climbing area is open again as of tomorrow, Friday, July 13. As far as park management knows, the chicks fledged successfully, bringing all climbing closures to an end for the season.
Yep, the prairie falcons decided to move their nest this year. This translates to a lifting of Picnic Lunch Wall route closures above 100 feet and Voyage of the Cow Dog restrictions as of May 11, 2017.BUT, they are now on the northeast face of the Smith Rock Group, so routes above 100 feet there are closed. Single pitch routes remain open.
Thanks climbers for minding the seasonal nesting route closures and hikers for keeping noise to a minimum on the Canyon Trail. Smith Rock raptors had an excellent year with the confirmed fledging of Bald and Golden eaglets.
